Warm Up The Long Winters in NYC: Learn Ukulele!

Picture this… a cozy fireside gathering with your family and friends, someone breaks out an instrument and before you know it, you’re in the middle of a singalong to your favorite nostalgic tunes. The problem is, maybe you don’t know how to play an instrument and this cozy fireside vibe feels out of reach. But guess what… it doesn’t have to be!

But is it hard to learn ukulele?

No matter your age, ukulele is one of the most accessible instruments to learn. While there will always be plenty to learn and master on any instrument, you can feel confident in being able to play a full song all the way through quicker than most instruments.

Many basic chord fingerings only require 1 - 3 strings, so if you start practicing now, you’ll have all the chords you need to play hundreds (if not thousands!) of songs before summer!

Can I learn ukulele before guitar?

Ukuleles are a fantastic way for children and adults alike to learn the basic skills required to play guitar! The chords between instruments will differ, but learning the ukulele will help build your confidence in strumming and picking patterns, as well as help build hand and finger strength.

Many people have first-hand experience learning guitar, and have felt frustrated by the amount of strings, the hand strength required to bar a chord, or even the pain of having to build calluses on your fingertips. 

If this feels relatable (ditto…), ukuleles are a great way to learn very similar skills with less pressure. Ukuleles are of course smaller, have just 4 strings, wider frets, and much softer strings than a typical guitar.

Can I teach myself ukulele?

Well, of course you are welcome to try! That said, you’re in NYC, surrounded by some of the best musicians in the world (many of them who are also part of our Blue Balloon teacher network!). Having a teacher work with you or your child can make a world of difference in learning any musical skill. Our lessons are custom tailored to each individual student setting every one of our students up for success! You can learn how to make a delicious cake by watching your favorite YouTube chef, but if you have any questions… have you SEEN how crazy a comment section can get?!
