Rachel Lipson, the “matriarch of modern music education” is an accomplished educator, prolific songwriter, performer, multi-instrumentalist, business consultant, advisor and entrepreneur.

What began as a one woman music school in Rachel’s studio apartment in 2008, has developed into what Blue Balloon is today: a network of 75+ amazing and talented independent teachers, teaching over 400 students a week on many different instruments all over the world.

Rachel lives in Park Slope, Brooklyn with her husband, two boys, a rescue dog Finn and a Windsprite pup, Birdie.

IMAGINE IT.

Blue Balloon was founded on the concept that anyone can write a song from the very first lesson. Unlike the classical tradition that's centered around mastering an instrument before composing, we believe encouraging creativity and fostering each student's unique sense of self expression is the key to joyful learning early on that lasts a lifetime.

PLANT IT.

Not all businesses start with a business plan, investors and a brick and mortar! Blue Balloon started in 2010 as a side gig and as word spread, Rachel left her day job as a teacher at Saint Ann’s School in Brooklyn and went off on her own to make something bigger of this idea that kids can learn an instrument through writing their own songs. A friend designed the logo and branding and Blue Balloon became a reality.

WATER IT.

In 2013, with the hopes of starting a family and taking a “maternity leave” from teaching, Rachel brought other teachers into the fold who specialized in other instruments and had various teaching styles. This was a pivotal moment in the growth of the company - Rachel went on to find her strengths as a leader and began to scale this dream of a company.

WATCH IT GROW.

Today, Blue Balloon is in 7 cities, with a network of 75+ talented and creative independent instructors and a small but mighty team of 6 amazing folks working behind the scenes to make the magic possible. The annual showcases draw over 1000 people and feature each student performing one original song in front of a nurturing, supportive audience. Featured in many major publications in NYC and beyond, Blue Balloon is known as a leader in the field of music education and widely credited as paving the way for others to incorporate more creativity in music instruction.
